Physically, Spiritually, Rejoicing

(Remember that words have meanings and depth that are not necessarily common in our modern vernacular (We THINK we know what they mean without thinking about it! ~~~)
(such as satisfied (see use no.5 = no doubt))
- use a dictionary or thesaurus that educates us better than socialism has stupefied us.
(self proclaimed/visioned/organized socialists selected and sent groups to Europe to be educated and return to rewrite our textbooks, history books, and reference/education materials at least as early as the early 1900s (mostly after WWI).))

Are you an addict? to what?

What will it be like when the time comes to use your food storage?  Will your depression, irritability, anxiety, or moodiness, (etc) become the predominant face of your personality? or will your food be able to allow you to thrive?  Does your food storage support your cycle of dependency? or are you going to go through withdrawals and/or crash and burn?

How about this as an alternative?!
  1. Store healthy, live supporting foods that you can live and thrive on.  They are the basics used by people before industrial times - like the majority of time on this planet.  And are still used by healthy people today!!  Ignore all the expensive fancy packages for now. Ignore the most recent hypes and just get your basics covered.
  2. Take the mood cure questionnaire from here (has 5 categories) or Ross' book The Mood Cure and target your addictions, dependencies, controlling habits, depression and physical hangups from an amino acid perspective.
(Naturally any and all addictions, habits, etc are physical and spiritual and should be addressed from a WHOLE perspective). Releasing yourself from these will allow you to live life NOW and make changes you've been "choosing to procrastinate" while you've been shackled by them.)
  3. Now, start eating your food storage - and restocking, of course. Remember that the amino acids are a temporary supplement plan to bring those amino acid reserves up to par.  The body's health should be maintained with God's whole foods.
So what are the planet's traditional foods? Plants and animals (as you choose), not nifty looking stuff forced from a machine and boxed up for a nice subsidized price or market 'value'.
The value is in foods that common sense and experience dictate as good for you.
  1. "Plants" = leaves, roots, fruits, and seeds (oil/mineral rich fruits - if eaten whole are sprouted or soaked to turn into leaves/roots) including seaweed (in abundance esp. if the next section is limited)
  2. "Animals" = whole (meat + fat + bone/bone broth + organs) or products (eggs + milk + butter + cheese)

Simple Rocket Stove How-To

Here is a video showing how to Quickly Assemble a Rocket Stove out of 21 bricks. I imagine now the the straightforward concepts have been presented, any size or location can be tried out. (I'd like to test it out on a larger scale for large pots.) This is so quick it could be put together for a sudden need or just to use as a contained firepit.

Remember, the type of brick is somewhat important, most obviously = it needs to be able to 1) handle high heat and flame and 2) be able to insulate to some level.
I found these at Home Depot that I am going to try out! They are called Fire Bricks. The employee said this is what customers use when they are building a fire pit type application....
I'm hoping that this also would imply that heating them won't smoke anything too toxic into my food and airways.

However, perhaps someone has some experience with a different brick and could suggest a different one? yes?

CERT Emergency Preparedness Training

During a wide-spread disaster, the first 72-96 hours will be faced without the help of emergency professionals. The best way for you to prepare to effectively help your family and neighbors is through . . .
Emergency Preparedness Training
We have the privilege of having Kenneth Moravec come back to the Phoenix area. Normally this course takes 7-14 weeks, depending on what level you want to obtain and who teaches it. Kenneth is the only one that can do it in 1 ½ days. It is an exceptional program and well worth your time and effort.
March 18, 2011 7:45 am - 9 pm
March 19, 2011 7:45 am - 12 pm
Cost: $60.00*
LDS Church at
2520 N. Hartford Street, Chandler
Why come to CERT training?
Because CERT training will help you and your family be better prepared for disasters and other emergencies. You will also learn how to best help others. After a disaster, the professionals will be so overwhelmed that they may not be available for 72-96 hours or more. The rescue efforts will be up to us. You and others will want to help. CERT training teaches neighbors how to work together more effectively to save more lives and ease the hardship people go through until the professionals are able to get there.
What is CERT training?
CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) was created in California to help people better get through a wide spread earthquake disaster. The program is so effective that it is now taught throughout the country to help people with any type of disaster.
CERT is a seven session course focusing on the following concepts:
· General Emergency Preparedness
· Fire Suppression
· First Aid and Disaster Medical Operations
· Light Search and Rescue
· Disaster Psychology
· Organization
· Terrorism Instruction
· Simulated Disaster Exercise
Everyone 12 and older is encouraged to attend.
Limited space is available.
*Cost is $45.00 for personal safety gear, $15 towards travel expenses of instructor, instruction is free.
All those already CERT trained can come review for free.
Advanced registration required and fees paid by Sunday, March 6, 2011.
Sign-up by emailing Wendy Killinger
If you don’t prepare, who will?
Attached are inserts for weekly church programs and flyers for bulletin boards. Please distribute and post as much as you can. You are also welcome to forward this email. The more people we can help prepares, the more lives we can save.

Update

General Conference has passed and we have our Ensigns in hand.....

Have you updated your emergency kits?
Do you have an emergency kit?
Have you backed up your hard drive, pictures, & documents?

Are you preparing physically, as well as spiritually, for whatever is around the corner?

72 Hour Kit

FYI - there are simpler and smaller kit lists that are readily available on the internet, including some mentioned before. Here is another one that I liked.
Whatever the kit you decide to make, you need to have it contained (backpack etc) and know where it is. You will be blessed to simply have something. My own experiences of emergencies has been a driving force of what I have included, Please make a kit that will bless you with peace.
I have (AGAIN) updated/improved our list for a 72 Hour Kit to a point that I feel I should share it! Here is the link to view and print. (note: multiple pages on link)
Feel free to copy and paste on your computer to alter for your family and needs/likes/dislikes....

I aimed for about 2000 calories of food per person regardless of age. This is easy to change within just a few items.
Baby food is included and listed separately on the sheet but packaged together by meal.
I have also broken it down for what should work for one adult (calories are estimated based on the packages that my family uses).

Size of cans for veggies, chili, and beans can vary between small pop-top size ~8 oz, the standard 15 oz size, or a larger size depending on your needs.
I tried to find fruit and juice in lighter weight packaging such as juice boxes since more metal would be more weight to carry.
There is NO Glass. Obviously foods such as dehydrated, ready made meals (often sold in camping sections) would be very practical, but I felt that availability and cost would drive this kit.

Click pictures to enlarge.
Not pictured: the non food items and the (have to buy it still!) Water Bottles and Crackers. (Filter bottles are in the brown boxes in the back)

I have ours bagged in heavy duty (name brand) gallon size freezer bags with items split up into "3 days" of multiple labeled bags each.
In addition to this, I put the non-food items (can opener, TP, First Aid kit, etc) into additional bags. (Bags keep it orderly, safe from weather, and provide useful later. (can be put in boiling water to cook oatmeal/mush... etc))

The bags then go into a backpack, bucket, or sturdy bag of some sort.

The Water needs to be included in the same backpack as the food
OR
split the entire Kit between multiple backpacks so that each one holds part food AND part water (in which case, some duplicating would be ideal in case the bags are split up - such as TP and a can opener in each backpack.)

One commonly recommended tip is to update your kit every General Conference Weekend. I have included columns named Apr and Oct so that you can check off (on a yearly print-off that is kept with your kit) as you replace items when they expire. (Expiration dates are general time frames, just estimate your need to replace to keep them safe enough.)

I regret not keeping track of the prices. I bought the foods at various times over the last few months whenever I thought about it or saw a good deal. Generally, Fresh & Easy and Walmart were the more 'productive' AND cheaper priced places.

72 Hour Kits

This can be simple enough to do in less than a week. Do it soon.

A more complex list, at least give it a read, can be found in the side margin of the blog RUGetting Prepared, titled the Cadillac of72 hour kits.

Here's a basic outline. (Food suggestions to come at later date.)
  • Backpack for every two family members (always plan for individuals or at least buddy system for if separated :| )
  • Food (high protein calories preferred for less to carry = remember 72 Hours!)
  • Water + water treatment (filter and/or iodine/bleach/silver)
  • First Aid Kit (incl meds.)
  • Basic Survival (matches, can opener, think boy scouts)
  • Basic change of clothes
  • Important personal and family documents etc on jump drive (or equivalent quick grab; including important phone numbers, insurance companies)
Every kit will have it's weakness depending on the variety of use - fire, evacuation, etc -
But something (especially water) is better than nothing.
Do your Best + Prayer, and you'll be blessed.

Update this kit every General Conference or other pivotal date every 6 months.

Solar Oven cooking

This is a 'free' way to cook year round.
You can make the simplest foods such as beans and the (seemingly) most difficult such as bread.

here is a post with a few ideas to get started with on building your own.

There are also commercially made ovens, I receive emails occasionally from a group that does discounted group orders. Let me know if you are interested. email santan2can at gmail .com
